Savage Worlds is a core rule system to run Tabletop Roleplaying Games in various settings. It is designed to play heroes (and main antagonists) as if they were the main characters of a movie, especially action movies. Typical ambiances which could be run with Savage Worlds are Indiana Jones, James Bond, The Bourne Trilogy, the Lord of the Ring, Honor Among Thieves, or Star Wars.
The system is skill-based, story focused, and leaves a large narrative flexibility to the game master. Simple to start playing with, the system is far from simplistic and encourages tactical thinking from the heroes. Being classless, the character creation may lack a bit of guidance for new players, but it is highly flexible.
Created by Shane Hensley and published by Pinnacle Entertainment Group, there are over 200 vibrant settings one can run with Savage Worlds. And it's cheap, as you only ever buy the core rules book once, and with it, run as many settings you like, you bought or imagined/designed/adapted by yourself.
This is made possible by a clever licensing system, allowing community authors (Savage Worlds Adventurer's Guild — SWAG) as well as more professional/involved partners (ACE licensees) to create content (adventures, supplements, settings...) for Savage Worlds. Learn more on savageuniverse.com.
